After winning the tip to start the night, the Gillett Tigers continued to play strong, scoring the first few buckets. For the first 8 minutes of the game the Tigers had a lead on Lena. It wasn’t until the 10 minute mark of the first half when Lena started to pull ahead.
A strong 1-2-2 press from Lena forced turnovers and set the pace of the game. Along with the press, standout Junior Dash Comins led the team with shifty passing and great outside shooting. It wasn’t long before Lena had a significant lead on Gillett. Going into halftime the lead was extended to 12 with the score at 29-17.
Coming out of the locker room for the second half Lena had another slow start. Quick scores from Gillett cut the lead down to only a 5 point advantage. Throughout the rest of the night we saw close scores.
Now at the five minute mark, Gillet was in foul trouble. Many players went to the line for Lena in bonus, extending their lead. Back to back threes from Senior Cooper Demmith gave Lena another surge of points. With only a few minutes left, Lena was up by ten and in control of the game.
Though Gillett fought hard the Wildcats held their lead to the end with a final score of 57-45. The leading scorer from Gillett was Senior Bradyn Wendorff with 16 points and Dash Comins from Lena with 17.
Coach Heimke was most proud of this win stating, “The way the kids fought they battled all night. We threw something new in the last few days of going into a 1-2-2 press and they came out and performed it very well. We forced 15 turnovers in the first half which we haven’t done all year so that felt good. Lucas Koslowsky also hit some big shots for us. He has been struggling with the shot lately so getting that down was huge for us tonight.”
With this exciting win, the Wildcats are more motivated than ever for their next games ahead and plan on keeping their momentum.
