The M&O Conference champion Lena girls basketball team wrapped up its regular season with a lopsided 77-47 victory over Suring on Friday, Feb. 16 to close out the conference campaign with a 15-1 record.
The Wildcats claimed the 2023-24 M&O conference title with the win over Suring, but it wasn’t the only honor to be bestowed upon the Wildcats that night as Eva Brooks entered the Wildcats history books, surpassing her 1000th point.
“The conference Championship & Eva’s 1000 points were very well earned from all the teams hard work & dedication,” said Lena head coach Tim Goldschmidt. “They put in a lot of time in the off season & all their determination has paid off with these 2 huge feats accomplished. They are a very unselfish group that plays & gets along well with all the same goals in mind. It has been an honor to coach them & see them grow & succeed. All the endless hours of hard work have paid back great dividends. There is plenty more to accomplish & believe they are up to the task.”
Lena had two players record double doubles in the game with Eva Brooks scoring a game-high 23 points to go along with her 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals, and Madilyn Thomson finishing with 12 points, 11 boards, three assists and three steals. Kai Fischer also had a big game with 16 points, seven steals, a block, four assists and two rebounds.
Coleman comes out on top in battle of M&O’s top teams
COLEMAN – The M&O Conference’s two best teams faced each other in Coleman on Tuesday, Feb. 13, with the second-place Cougars getting the better of the Wildcats by a final of 53-43.
Vivian Kostreva had 15 points, four rebounds, an assist and three steals for the Cougars, Callee Compe finished with 13 points, eight boards, four assists, two steals and a block to go along with 10 points, six boards and three assists from Kiersten Jensen.
Lena got a game-high 19 points from Eva Brooks, who turned in a double double with 12 boards, four assists, five steals and two blocks. Madilyn Thomson finished with nine points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
“It’s senior night tonight so the girls are playing with a lot of pride,” said Coleman head coach Todd Olsen. “They know they can’t win the conference but they came out here and they worked their tails off.”
Niagara edged by Norway
NIAGARA – The Lady Badgers and the Knights of Norway, MI, after a very slow first half, put some offense together after the break, with the visitors from Michigan coming out on top in the 27-26 final.
Niagara got 10 points from Alivia Kleikamp, five apiece from Peyton allred and Sydney Swanson and three each from Emma Brasure and Rachel Walker.
Slow first half sinks Lady Badgers
NIAGARA – The Niagara girls found themselves down 39-22 at the end of the first half against Oneida Nation on Tuesday, Feb. 13 and were unable to turn things around in the second, losing by a final score of 63-47.
The Badgers had two players reach double-digit scoring with Alivia Kleikamp turning in 14 points and Bristol Sanicki 13.
Wolverines pull away from Rangers in first half, cruise to victory
WAUSAUKEE – Crivitz put together a 20-point halftime lead on its way to a 62-47 win over Wausaukee on Tuesday, Feb. 13.
The Wolverines, up 38-18 at the break to make things very difficult for the home team, were led by 11 points, two boards, three assists and two steals from Kiya Brand, along with 10 points, three steals, three assists and two rebounds from Lucy Gruszynski.
Wausaukee got a game-high 20 points from Melody Schaal to go along with 18 from Lydia Schaal.
Wolverines finish season with win over Cougars
CRIVITZ – The Crivitz girls finished the regular season third in the conference with a 10-6 M&O record following a 61-55 win over second-place Coleman on Friday, Feb. 16.
Kiya Brand led the Wolverines with 18 points, five rebounds, two assists, four steals and a block, backed up by Lucy Gruszynski’s 17 points, seven boards, two assists and five steals. Tayah Werner added 12 points, two rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Coleman got 22 points, three rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block from Kiersten Jensen while Vivian Kostreva added eight points and eight boards.
Bulldogs can’t put it together against Pioneers
SEVASTOPOL – The Peshtigo girls had trouble getting in sync on both offense and defense in their regular season finale against Sevastopol on Thursday, Feb. 15, falling behind 29-11 by the end of the first half on their way to a 53-29 defeat.
“It was a typical game for us. Defensively, we played good overall,” said Peshtigo head coach Pete Villas. “On the offensive end, we are still trying to find others to step up and score a little more. The younger players have started to show good progress. We need to rely less on three-point shots and try to attack the basket more.”
The Bulldogs were led by Audra Bauman’s eight points and four rebounds.
