A classic softball pitcher's duel transformed into a dramatic, error-filled, late-inning thriller as the Crivitz Varsity Wolverines secured a thrilling 3-2 walk-off victory over the Manawa Varsity Wolves. For the first six frames, the story of the afternoon centered on the absolute dominance of Crivitz ace Taryn Tracy in the circle and her own explosive bat. However, a chaotic seventh inning forced both teams to dig deep, culminating in a dramatic final play that left fans breathless.
The game started as a masterclass in pitching from Tracy. In the top of the first inning, she set the tone immediately by striking out Alayna Seeger looking and following it up by fanning Olivia Zielke swinging. Though Callie Pethke managed to reach on a hard ground ball single to center field, Tracy quickly closed the door by forcing Alexis Ferg to ground out to second base. In the bottom of the frame, Manawa's Olivia Zielke proved she was ready for a duel of her own. She forced a fly out from Haili Dorschner, a foul pop out from Hattie Frievalt, and struck out Izzy Wesoloski swinging to keep the game scoreless.
Tracy remained untouchable in the top of the second, carving through the Manawa lineup by striking out Taelyn Bonikowske swinging and Katelyn Krueger looking before inducing a routine ground out from Alyssa Zemple. In the bottom of the second, Tracy decided to take matters into her own hands at the plate, launching a towering fly ball over the left-field fence for a solo home run to break the ice and give Crivitz a 1-0 lead. The Wolverines kept the pressure on as Marli Meyers singled to third, Kirsten Pusick singled to left, and Lillian Biundo ripped a hard single to shortstop to completely load the bases with nobody out. After Brecken Ott popped out, Kiya Brand grounded into a fielder's choice to third base, which brought Meyers home to extend the lead to 2-0, though Pusick was thrown out trying to advance. Zielke then struck out Dorschner to escape further damage.
In the top of the third inning, Tracy continued her strikeout parade, fanning both Ella Gehrke and Andie Pankow swinging. Seeger managed to reach base on a fielding error by Crivitz first baseman Marli Meyers, and Zielke followed with a hard grounder to center for a single. With runners threatening, Tracy clamped down, forcing Pethke into a fielder's choice to third base to retire Seeger and end the frame. The bottom of the third saw Frievalt ground out and Wesoloski fly out before Tracy notched another hit with a single to center. Kyra Beier stepped in as a courtesy runner for Tracy and promptly stole second base while Meyers drew a walk, but Zielke straddled the trouble by getting Pusick to pop out to third.
Defensive and pitching excellence defined the fourth inning. In the top half, Tracy made quick work of Manawa, forcing Ferg to ground out to first before striking out Bonikowske looking and Krueger swinging. In the bottom half, Biundo singled to left for Crivitz and advanced to second on a sacrifice ground out by Ott. Zielke held her ground, freezing Brand for a called third strike and getting Dorschner to fly out to left field.
The fifth inning mirrored the fourth's tension. Tracy retired Zemple on a fly out before Gehrke singled on a ground ball to short. Pankow executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Gehrke to second, but Tracy stranded her there by forcing Seeger to ground out to second base. In the bottom of the fifth, Frievalt grounded out and Wesoloski popped out before Tracy singled yet again. Beier re-entered to run for Tracy but was thrown out attempting to steal second base by Manawa catcher Alexis Ferg, abruptly ending the half-inning.
With time running out, Tracy continued to look masterful in the top of the sixth, inducing a ground out from Zielke, striking out Pethke looking, and forcing Ferg to line out sharply to third base. The Wolverines looked primed to add insurance in the bottom of the sixth when Meyers was hit by a pitch and subsequently stole second base while Pusick struck out. Biundo then delivered a hard single to short, moving Meyers to third base. With runners on the corners and Crivitz looking to break the game open, Zielke dug deep and struck out both Ott and Brand swinging to keep Manawa within striking distance.
That defensive stand set the stage for a wild, chaotic top of the seventh inning. Bonikowske led off for Manawa and reached first base on a costly fielding error by Meyers. Krueger moved her over to second with a successful sacrifice bunt to the pitcher. Then, the wheels began to turn for the Wolves; during Zemple’s at-bat, Bonikowske stole third base and subsequently raced home to score on yet another fielding error by Meyers, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Zemple then stole second base, putting herself in scoring position for Gehrke, who bloomed a clutch single to right field to score Zemple and tie the game at 2-2. Pankow singled to left to keep the rally alive, but Tracy limited the disaster by forcing Seeger to pop out and Zielke to ground out to shortstop.
With the game suddenly tied, Crivitz came up in the bottom of the seventh looking for magic. Dorschner popped out to shortstop to start the frame, but Frievalt ignited the dugout by lining a single to center field. Wesoloski followed with a fly out to left, but Frievalt tagged up perfectly, showing great awareness to hustle into second base. With first base open and Tracy representing a massive threat, Manawa opted to intentionally walk the star pitcher to set up a force play. That brought up Meyers, who was carrying the immense weight of three fielding errors that had allowed Manawa to tie the game just minutes prior. Meyers found ultimate redemption, smashing a hard ground ball single to right field. Frievalt rounded third and sprinted across home plate, scoring the game-winning run to secure a breathtaking walk-off victory for Crivitz.
The Manawa Varsity Wolves struggled to find offensive consistency throughout the day, compiling two runs on five hits over 27 at-bats while failing to draw a single walk and striking out nine times. Ella Gehrke paced the Wolves by going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Callie Pethke, Olivia Zielke, and Andie Pankow each collected a single, and Alyssa Zemple drove in a run despite not recording an official hit. Taelyn Bonikowske and Zemple generated havoc on the basepaths with one stolen base and one run scored apiece. On the pitching side, Olivia Zielke suffered a heartbreaking loss after a incredibly resilient complete-game effort, throwing 6.2 innings on 116 pitches with 72 strikes, surrendering ten hits, two walks, and three runs, all earned, while striking out six of the 32 batters she faced.
The Crivitz Varsity Wolverines offense put together a powerful performance, racking up three runs on ten hits over 29 at-bats, drawing two walks, and striking out six times. Taryn Tracy put on a spectacular show at the plate by going a perfect 3-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk, and an RBI, while Lillian Biundo went 3-for-3 and Marli Meyers finished 2-for-2 with a walk, a run scored, and the game-winning RBI single. Hattie Frievalt went 1-for-4 and scored the decisive run, Kirsten Pusick added a single, and Kiya Brand contributed an RBI. Crivitz found success on the move with stolen bases from Meyers and courtesy runner Kyra Beier, though Beier was also caught stealing once, and the defense finished with three total errors. In the circle, Taryn Tracy earned a well-deserved victory with a stellar complete-game performance, tossing seven innings on 101 pitches with 75 strikes, giving up five hits and two runs, both of which were unearned, while walking none and racking up nine strikeouts against 29 batters faced.
