— The Violet —
The common blue violet, simple but sweet
Lavender or Confederate gray
growing in meadows and the woods
Blooming in Wisconsin in April and May
Five petals of beauty on each one
The lowest a platform for the bees
Who turn upside down to reach the nectar
Then fly away through the trees
Carrying the pollen from flower to flower
Impregnating the pistil in their flight
Creating more beauty for the next generation|
Of children to dream of in the night
The common blue violet, simple but sweet
Not near as glamorous as the rose
But it’s simplicity has always held me
Starring at it as it grows
