MENOMINEE – There were a lot of runs being scored at Spies Field on Thursday, Jun. 13 as Menominee’s Post 146 got together with Coleman for a Thursday evening Legion baseball doubleheader, the first game going to the Red Wave by a final of 10-8 before Coleman responded with an 18-1 win for the second game.
“We swung the bats really well in the first game, had a lot of baserunners,” said Menominee manager Aaron Buck. “We could have had a few more runs if we could have gotten a couple more base hits with the bases loaded, kind of kept our scoring down. It was a good back-and-forth game that we were just kind of able to hold on to.”
The Red Wave brought three across in the bottom of the first inning to kick off the day’s scoring as Gable Buck, Connor Shroeder and Cyle Kenney scored on RBIs from Robert Finger and Ethan Short.
Coleman’s Logan Lamine led off the top of the second frame with a triple and was later able to score his team’s first run of the day on a passed ball.
The visitors took the lead in the top of the third inning as Bryce Heroux, Miles Lewis and Brady Dufeck all reached home plate thanks to an off inning by Menominee’s defense.
The Red Wave did well to respond in the bottom of the third. With two outs down, Kenney got aboard on a double before Short brought him home with an RBI-double of his own. Finger was up next and he blasted a triple to score Short and put Menominee up 5-4.
Coleman’s Matt Tedtman got aboard with a walk to lead off the top of the fourth inning, followed by another walk earned by Chad Bruker. Later in the frame, Lewis was hit by a pitch to juice the bases.
Up next, Dufeck’s patience paid off with a walk that scored Tedtman, followed by a two-RBI single by Tyler Rennie to give the visiting team a 5-7 lead.
Looking to respond with two outs and runners at first and third in the bottom of the fourth, Menominee’s Shroeder throttled one to center left to score two runs and tie things up at 7-7. Up next, Kenney connected on a nice single to score Shroeder and give the Red Wave an 8-7 advantage.
Menominee brought two more runs across in the fifth frame, while holding Coleman to one run in the top of the sixth to take the victory in a well-played game by both teams.
The nightcap saw Coleman open up with a five-run first inning, taking advantage of three quick errors from the home team and a nice single from Tedtman.
Menominee’s struggles from the mound crushed the team in the fifth inning as Coleman, being patient at the plate, racked up 10 runs on just three hits to put the game away.
“In the second game, we just couldn’t get any base hits,” said Buck. “We gave up a lot of walks, just too many errors.”
Game 1
Coleman 0 1 3 3 0 1 – 8
Menominee 3 0 2 3 2 x – 10
Game 2
Coleman 5 0 1 2 10 – 18
Memoninee 0 0 0 1 0 – 1
Another home field one and one for Red Wave
MENOMINEE – The Red Wave, playing a doubleheader at home on Saturday, Jun. 15, dropped game one against Marquette by a final of 7-5 before rebounding with a 4-2 win in game two to finish the week.
Menominee got all of its scoring done early in Saturday’s opener.
Facing a two-run deficit going into the bottom of the first, Turin Davis led things off with a walk, followed by another walk from Gable Buck before both were brought home on a two-RBI single from Cyle Kenney, who would score later in the inning thanks to a walk from Drew Olson with the bases loaded, giving the home team a 3-2 edge.
The Red Wave got another two across in the bottom of the second, highlighted by a sacrifice fly from Ethan Short, but that would be then end of the scoring for Menominee, who couldn’t keep Marquette off the scoreboard in the later innings in a loss to begin play on Saturday.
“In game one today, our pitching just kind of ran out of gas at the end,” said Buck. “We only had three hits to their nine so that really hurt us. We were up 5-3 going into the last inning and gave up four runs.”
Game two saw a different look from the Red Wave, who, after falling behind 2-1 early, put three runs up in the bottom of the third and then rode the left arm of Aiden Sevon to a two-run victory.
The difference in the second game was a two-RBI double from Robert Finger in the third inning.
“In the second game, they played well. They made a lot of plays and their communication out there was better,” commented coach Buck. “We’ve been having a little bit of trouble in the second game, seems like we’re just kind of flat in game twos, and so we really talked about that when we got to the ballfield today. We need some better energy for that second game. But we’re young and we expect to get better as the season goes on.”
Game 1
Marquette 2 0 0 0 1 4 – 7
Menominee 3 2 0 0 0 0 – 5
Game 2
Marquette 0 1 1 0 0 0 – 2
Menominee 1 0 3 0 0 x – 4
