MARINETTE – In a holiday battle between two ever-improving teams at Pedersen Ball Park on Thursday, Jul. 4, Marinette’s Post 39 picked up a 5-4 victory over Menominee on a tie-breaking, two-run scoring outburst in the top of the seventh.
The Red Wave drew first blood in this one, with Torin Davis coming across in the top of the first on a Marinette error but Post 39 was able to shake it off and respond with a run in the bottom of the frame, with Ethan Doubek bringing Chase MacGregor across with a sacrifice fly.
Menominee’s Davis notched an RBI in the top of the second, plating Ethan Short, who reached on a single to lead off the inning, on a groundout.
Menominee pushed its advantage to 3-1 later in the game with Aiden Sevon scoring on an error by Marinette before bringing its last run of the game across in the sixth inning with Connor Schroeder connecting for an RBI-single to score Davis, making it 4-1.
Marinette got two runs across in the bottom of the sixth.
JJ Brand and Kolton Goldsmith loaded first and second base with consecutive singles before Brand scored on a sac fly from Chase MacGregor.
Later in the inning, Goldsmith scored on a groundout by Ethan Doubek to bring Marinette to within a run at 4-3.
Leading off the pivotal seventh, Landon Corwin got the comeback going by sending a shot to left field for a double.
Jason Kruse got on with a single before Maverick Williamson juiced the bases by earning a walk.
Brand tied things up by scoring Corwin from third base on a single before Goldsmith brought the winning run home by blasting a shot out of the infield to score Kruse.
Marinette mercy-ruled in Manitowoc
MANITOWOC – Coming off a close 5-4 victory over Menominee at home, Marinette’s Post 39 headed south to face Manitowoc on Saturday, Jul. 6, where a rough first inning quickly derailed its hopes of pulling off back-to-back wins as Marinette ame out on the short end of a 12-2, six-inning decision to bring its overall record to 3-10.
In the bottom of the opening frame, Manitowoc third baseman, working with no outs on the board and two runners on base, cranked a pitch from Marinette’s Logan Kurth over the fence to make it 3-0.
Manitowoc took advantage of more Marinette miscues in that opening inning to score another four runs and go ahead by a commanding seven runs.
Post 39’s offense got a spark in the third inning, led off by consecutive walks earned by Kolton Goldsmith and Ethan Doubek. Up next, Kurth drilled a shot to the wall in center to get himself to second base and score Goldsmith.
Then, Doubek was brought across thanks to a sacrifice fly from Justin Kruse to bring the score to 8-2.
That would be the end of the day’s scoring for Marinette though, as the home team turned in two runs in the fifth and another two in the sixth to finish things early at 12-2.
