PESHTIGO – Eleven Peshtigo High School seniors, in coordination with their advisor Amy Reed, recently turned a simple act of service into a meaningful tribute to local veterans.
Members of Rho Kappa and the school’s Volunteer Club joined local veteran Dennis Czapiewski at Peshtigo Riverside Cemetery to help remove American flags that had been placed on veterans’ graves. Previously, they had helped place the flags on the graves. Working together, the students carefully gathered the flags and helped ensure the cemetery was respectfully cared for.
For the students, the project was more than completing a community service activity. It provided an opportunity to recognize the sacrifices made by veterans and to learn the importance of giving back to their community.
Czapiewski, who helped organize and guide the students during the project, shared his knowledge of the proper care and respect associated with the flags and veterans’ graves. His involvement also gave the students an opportunity to connect with a local veteran and hear firsthand about the importance of remembering those who served.
The project reflects a larger lesson about community involvement — service does not always require a large event or complicated undertaking. Sometimes, meaningful service is simply showing up, working together and taking care of a need in the community.
The students’ work at Riverside Cemetery is an example of that philosophy in action. By combining the efforts of Rho Kappa, the Volunteer Club and Czapiewski, the group was able to accomplish a task that honored both the cemetery and the veterans remembered there.
For these Peshtigo seniors, the experience offered a lasting reminder that leadership is not simply about holding a title. It can be demonstrated through willingness to serve, work with others and make a positive difference close to home. Service begins when someone sees a need and chooses to help.
