Menominee American Legion Auxiliary Unit 146 Letter to the Editor

Posted

Dear Editor,

The Menominee American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 146 would like to take this time to reflect with the community on Memorial Day, to remember those veterans who fought, and courageously gave of their lives while serving in America’s Armed Forces.

Since Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day from the American Civil War era to honor Union soldier casualties, it was not until after World War I, however, that it was extended to include all men, and women who died in any war, or military action.  The current name for this day did not come into use until after World War II, and Memorial Day is now a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May.  As a nation, we stand united, recognizing that the liberties we enjoy today were built upon the sacrifices of the brave.

The American Legion Auxiliary is the world’s largest premier patriotic service organization, and has been advocating for our veterans and military since 1919.  The ALA members exemplify “Service, Not Self” through countless volunteer hours, and attending conferences/programs including an increased presence in Washington, D.C. as the American Legion Family gives a voice for veterans, military and their families.

The American Legion Auxiliary promotes Americanism, and encourages love of country, and to display pride, and respect toward the United States of America, and its flag.  Also, we encourage patriotism, and support of the Constitution of the United States, the military and to enjoy the freedom we live from the sacrifices of our veterans.

Remember the public is invited to attend the following Memorial commemorative services in our area on Monday, May 27 as follows:  Memorial Service at Birch Creek Cemetery (sponsored by Menominee/Marinette Am Vets) - 7 a.m.; Also, Breakfast at Legion Post 146 - 7-10 a.m. (Cost: $9);  Parade - 8:45 a.m. from Bandshell to Veterans’ Park on First St.; Memorial Service at Veterans’ Park (sponsored by Menominee American Legion Post 146) - 9 a.m.; Memorial Service in Veterans Memorial Section, Riverside Cemetery (sponsored by Disabled American Veterans /Chapter 25) - 10 a.m.
