Bulldogs come close, fall to Wolves

PESHTIGO – The Peshtigo girls, down 17-12 at half, were within striking distance of the lead against Algoma on Friday, Jan. 26 but came up short as the Wolves left town with a 36-27 victory.

“Our defense was the best it’s been all season. The girls communicated extremely well and adjusted to everything Algoma threw at us on their own,” siad Peshtigo head coach Pete Villas. “Offensively, we had the most balanced scoring of the year. We still need some of the other girls to step up a little to help us get some wins.”

Rylie Ellie led the way for the home team with eight points and four rebounds. Holly Pesch had seven points and three boards while Cameron Finger finished with seven points and five rebounds.

“These are the kind of improvements that will make us better, not only the rest of this season, but next year as well,” said coach Villas. “I hate to sound like a broken record but we are getting better each week even though the wins are still eluding us. We are much more competitive over the last month. Tonight was a perfect example of that. Algoma absolutely dominated us the first time. Tonight, we were a few made shots of pulling this one out. I could not be more proud of the way we played.”

Sloppy night sinks Bulldogs

STURGEON BAY – 15 points from Holly Pesch wasn’t enough to put Peshtigo into the win column on Monday, Jan. 22 as they took a 39-34 loss.

“We came out flat and played slow offensively,” said Peshtigo head coach Pete Villas. “We didn’t set screens to open up our shooters, stood around and did a poor job attacking their zone until the final 3 minutes of the game. By that time, it was too late and we couldn’t pull ahead. It’s frustrating because Sturgeon Bay didn’t do anything defensively that we hadn’t seen or worked on this season. We just didn’t attempt to execute the game plan.“

Rylie Ellie finished with 11 in the loss.
