Helene Hanff, a sarcastic yet funny struggling script writer in New York City, is looking to purchase out- of-print antiquarian books. Frank Doel, a proper English gentleman, chief buyer of antiquarian books for Marks & Co London, takes Helene on as his personal patron. This true story, based on the correspondence between the two, spans over 20 years, starting in 1949.
Helene writes demanding yet witty letters and Frank's ever calm, proper demeanor does his best to find exactly what she is looking for. It does not take long before the entire staff is excited when a new letter arrives. What they really want is for Helene to come to London. This delightful, do I dare say love story, will have you laughing and crying right to the end.
