Janice Marquis Magnusson Holmes passed away on March 23, 2026. She was born in Norway, Michigan, September 9, 1935, to Peter and Althea (Laabs) Marquis. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, with a degree in education.

She loved teaching, but loved traveling more. Her love of travel began while teaching for the military in Okinawa. Her travels took her all over the world. She spent time in the Orient, Russia, and visited Europe, South America, and Africa. The most unusual trip she took was to float down the Amazon. (Her biggest complaint was the bugs were terrible.)

She never met a book she didn’t love. She was a voracious reader and often her first question to visitors was “what are you reading? She established a little lending library and was eager for everyone to share in the adventures of a well-loved book. Good Literature, hard-covered, paperback, magazine – it didn’t matter as long as it encouraged reading.

Janice retired from teaching, but she remained active in the community. She was an active member of the Amberg Museum; established “Quarry Tours” and would frequently take groups on tours; to top all the projects, she and her husband refinished all the pews in the Amberg Presbyterian Church. Occasionally she would be called for substitute teaching in local schools.

She was preceded in death by sisters Lois Gustafson, Audrey Sawyer, Phyllis Dixon, and Patricia Deau and brother Stephen Marquis. Janice is survived by siblings Sharyn Dunn, Peter (Pat) Marquis, Jeff (Roberta) Marquis,

Janice did not have children of her own, but she had many nieces and nephews that she loved and they loved her just as much. She also leaves behind a community of friends who will forever remember her travel stories.
