Expectations rising in Oconto

Posted

OCONTO – Two years ago, simply putting the Oconto football program on solid footing was enough for head coach Jake Reichow.

Last season, the Blue Devils wanted to prove they could compete.

Entering Year 3 under Reichow, the expectations have changed considerably.

Oconto followed an 0-9 season in Reichow’s debut with two victories last fall and came close to adding two more, including a tough loss to Chilton and a 28-24 loss to Peshtigo in the season finale.

Now Reichow believes a team that relied heavily on underclassmen a year ago is ready to turn some of those close games into victories.

“The first year, build a culture, just get the kids to buy in,” said Reichow. “Last year was to be competitive. I knew we probably were going to win one or two, and that’s what we did. This year, the goal is four or five wins at least, win homecoming and make the playoffs.”

The culture Reichow hoped to establish when he took over continues to show up during the offseason. Oconto had 48 players signed up for its summer lifting program and averaged roughly 84 percent attendance over 30 sessions, surpassing the team’s goal of 82 percent.

Read their full season preview in the August 19 edition of the Peshtigo Times.
