Exotic Pet Surrender Event coming to Oconto during Invasive Species Action Month

Posted

OCONTO – As part of Wisconsin’s Invasive Species Action Month, J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue (JRAAR) will host an Exotic Pet Surrender Event on Friday, June 27, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Farnsworth Public Library, located at 715 Main St., Oconto.

The event provides a safe, humane and judgment-free option for individuals who can no longer care for their exotic pets. Organizers hope the event will help prevent the release of non-native animals into Wisconsin’s environment — a major source of invasive species introductions.

“Invasive Species Action Month is the perfect time to remind people that releasing pets outdoors can seriously harm Wisconsin’s ecosystems,” said Macy Wolke-Yohr, an invasive species specialist with J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue.
“These events give people a responsible alternative while helping ensure the animals receive proper care and a second chance.”

Area organizations will accept fish, invertebrates, reptiles, pet birds, small mammals and plants — no questions asked. Visitors can also meet ambassador animals, hear rescue stories and take photos at a rescued pet photobooth.

Animals must arrive in secure containers. Dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, pigs and chickens will not be accepted. Mammals, birds and reptiles originating from outside Wisconsin must be accompanied by a current Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI).

Surrendered animals will undergo quarantine and observation before becoming available for adoption through J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue. Same-day adoptions will not be available.

The event is hosted by J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue, Farnsworth Public Library, University of Wisconsin Sea Grant and Water Resources Institutes and is proudly sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue has helped and rehomed more than 11,000 exotic animals since 2020 and continues to host surrender events throughout Wisconsin to help protect native wildlife and waterways.
