Crivitz Village Board candidate profiles

Posted

CRIVITZ – During the spring election on April 7 there will be three open seats on the Crivitz Village Board that four candidates will be vying for.

The four candidates are Damon Roman, incumbent trustee Cory Siebert, incumbent trustee Michael Strandt and Ashley Swick Scriven.

In an effort to give all candidates an opportunity to present their approach to the village board position, the Peshtigo Times reached out to candidates with a questionnaire form.
In alphabetical order, responses from Roman, Strandt and Swick Scriven can be found in this issue. Siebert did not respond.

Damon Roman

Why are you running for this position?

I am running on a platform of making our village an affordable place to live, as the high cost of living and limited job opportunities have forced many young people to leave after graduation.

I am also committed to safeguarding public input, promoting fiscal responsibility, and protecting property rights, which are essential to our community’s well-being.

If elected, what will be your top priorities?

My primary objectives are safeguarding property rights, ensuring public input, and preventing any erosion of these rights. Additionally, I prioritize cost of living and responsive governance.

What is your approach to handling complex issues?

My approach to handling complex issues is to get as much information from as many sources as possible.

I like to listen to people who actually have experience with the problem or would be affected by the proposed solution. Then come to a decisive decision that makes sense and can easily be explained.

On complex issues I think it’s important to be able to listen to people who disagree without becoming disagreeable yourself. It’s also very important to work with the existing board members.

How will you involve residents in the decision making process?

In my view, involving the residents you serve as an elected official is vital.

I am against any decrease in public input. It is our duty to listen to the public who have elected us to office. If this responsibility becomes too onerous, the elected official should decide not to seek re-election.

All too often, at every level of government, there is a rush to pass regulations or ordinances without considering the impact on the public, private property owners and businesses.

We must be willing to listen to the public, property owners, and businesses at all times. As a trustee, our duty is to serve the public.

We must aim to lower the cost of living and bring in more jobs.

Michael Strandt

Why are you running to retain this position?

Honestly, there’s still much to be done. And even undone.

By retaining my position, I continue to challenge the status quo, to best serve the individual and their best personal interests, for the betterment of those who live within the village.

If re-elected, what will be your top priorities?

My topmost priority is to the people who live in the village of Crivitz, the property owners and the tax payers, whether it involves removing unnecessary ordinances; my continued efforts to reduce or outright eliminate costs and spending; or to simply be the voice for those who feel that they aren’t being heard.

What is your approach to handling complex issues?

There are no complex issues, not when you KISS (keep it simple, “S” word of your choice).
Look at the issue or task at hand, and break it down into its components. Is it needed, or simply wanted? Does it serve the community; not just organizations within, but the people the Board serves?

Does it justify the cost, financial or otherwise? What is it’s impact, the pros and cons? And lastly, what kind of burden will this impose?

How will you involve residents in the decision making process?

Simply put, I listen. Whether through Facebook (unofficial) or through the Village of Crivitz’ supplied email (official), I’m available for any type of input. Likewise, I have no problem being told or asked something if I’m out and about. I’m here for you, I serve you; I don’t hold any special interests, do not represent any particular organization or family or group... I serve you and your interests.

Ashley Swick Scriven

Why are you running for this position?

To support and improve the lives of Village residents.

If elected, what will be your top priorities?

Road repair, park improvements, and promoting an inclusive community for residents and visitors.

What is your approach to handling complex issues?

Communication between all levels effected (government, village workers, and community members)

How will you involve residents in the decision making process?

Promote board meeting attendance, open line of communication for community questions, and transparency in how decisions are made.
