COLEMAN – The Coleman High football team weathered a 14-point fourth quarter by the visiting Bonduel Bears on Thursday, Aug. 29 to claim a close 22-20 victory to begin the new season.
The Cougars were in control most of the way on Thursday, starting things off with a three-yard rushing TD by Wes Bieber. In the first quarter, plus a two-point conversion. Next, quarterback Micah Kuchta ran one across from the two-yard line in the second quarter and then a third quarter score with Kolton Peters coming across with a rushing touchdown from five yards out.
The Bonduel air attack scored three straight from there, putting a scare on the Cougars fans in attendance, but Coleman’s defense did enough to preserve the victory.
Panthers take care of Bulldogs
OCONTO FALLS – A big 22-point second quarter highlighted a lopsided season-opening victory for the Oconto Falls High football team as it ran past Peshtigo 35-6 on Thursday, Aug. 29.
A 56-yard scoring run by Wyatt Laughrin, who would finish the game with 129 yards on nine carries, in the first quarter got the Panthers’ scoring started for the season, followed by a 20-yard pass from Emerich Skarban to Cole Bozile that ended up in the end zone in the second quarter.
Bozile scored another in the second quarter after picking up a Peshtigo fumble and bringing it back 48 yards and across the goal line to put the visiting team up 20-0.
The Bulldogs would get into the end zone for their only score in the third frame with Lincoln Nemec running one across the line from six yards out.
Blue Devils defeated by Wildcats
GREEN BAY – The Oconto High football team fell to 0-2 for the year following a 37-6 loss to Green Bay West on Thursday, Aug. 29.
The Blue Devils struggled to get their run game going, with three rushers totaling just 12 yards on the day, leaving the majority of the day’s production up to the passing game, where Aiden Hagel went 5-for-11 for 75 yards, including a 36-yard scoring strike to Tyler Beekman for the team’s lone score of the contest.
Titans blank Bobcats
NIAGARA – In a non-conference season opener, the Lena/ST. Thomas High 8-man squad shut out Niagara by a final score of 30-0 on Thursday, Aug. 29.
Max Peterson scored the Titans’ first touchdown of the season with a 10-yard rush in the opening quarter. Peterson and Ty Shallow each ran one in during the second quarter and then Calvin Peters got in with a 19-yard scoring run in the fourth.
Peters led the offense with 122 yards on 17 attempts, followed by 76 yards on 14 carries by Shallow and 66 yards on 11 tries from Peterson.
“For the first game we played pretty good but we will need to clean up our Penalties, stay on our block and protect the ball,” said Lena/STAA co-head coach Dale Lange. “We have work to do because when we play better teams this could be the difference. On the positive side, we did have good pursuit to the ball. Next week, we will be challenged by a much improved NEW/Oneida team.”
Wolverines maul Orioles
FOND DU LAC – The Crivitz High football team is off to a 2-0 start to its 2024 campaign following a 40-0 drubbing of North Fond Du Lac on Thursday, Aug. 29.
The Wolverines racked up more than 300 rushing yards in their week two victory, picking up five of their six touchdowns on the ground.
Brody MacNeil was the first to score, with a six-yard carry to paydirt in the opening quarter. Up next came the lone score through the air for Cirvitz in the game as quarterback Colten Tarmann connected with Kade Thoma for a 39-yard pass play that ended up in the end zone.
MacNeil, who totaled 135 yards on 10 carries for the game, rushed for another two scores, from the 11 and then from the 30 to go along with ground-game scores by Evan Orlando and Devon Weiss.
