Bulldogs nearly break through

PESHTIGO – The Peshtigo girls went into the locker room at halftime with a 18-10 lead over the visiting Vikings of Gibraltar and looked to be headed for their first Packerland Conference victory of the season on Thursday, Jan. 11, only to be overtaken over the final minute of play in a tough 39-37 defeat.

“We played a very good game tonight. The girls did a good job executing our plan,” said Peshtigo head coach Pete Villas. “We started off great especially on the defensive end and led for over 35 of the 36 minutes. This was a heartbreaking loss for us. I feel awful for our girls to play such a great game and lose at the buzzer.”

Gibraltar took its first lead of the contest at 36-34 with just under a minute left on the clock. Ther Bulldogs, according to coach Villas, made a couple of big stops on the defensive end before Kylie Villas made a free throw to cut it to one. Holly Pesch took down a rebound on the defensive end and then Kylie hit Rylie Ellie cutting to the basket to take a 37-36 lead with 24 seconds to go.

“Again we made a stop and got the ball back forcing them to foul us. Unfortunately, we couldn’t connect on our free throws with 8 seconds remaining,” said coach Villas, recapping the end of the game. “Gibraltar got the rebound, went up the floor and hit a 3-pointer from 25 feet out at the buzzer to win it.”

Ellie led the Peshtigo offense with 13 points while Audra Bauman finished with eight.
