PESHTIGO – The City of Peshtigo Common Council met for a regular meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
During the business and communication portion of the meeting a variety of city employees were honored for their work.
The council officially recognized Fred Meintz for winning the Stewards of Safe Water Award from the American Waterworks Association in September.
Meintz joined the water and sewer committee in 2005 and served alongside five mayors, several DPW directors and many councils.
One of Meintz’s many contributions to the city included 2007 - 2008 installation of hydrous manganese oxide (HMO) treatment at all three well stations to meet safe drinking water standards. The $5.4 million improvement was financed with a 2.475% Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Safe Drinking Water Loan and improved water quality while helping keep user rates affordable, the city stated in a release.
Taryn Nall, a former consultant with Ruekert and Mielke, Inc., nominated Meintz for the award.
Nall attended the meeting, saying “Meintz has demonstrated an outstanding ability to lead and implement different difficult projects in a manner that successfully meets project goals and, at the same time, minimizes environmental impact and water user rates.”
He added that Meintz is a “very accomplished leader.”
After City of Peshtigo Mayor Katie Berman thanked Meintz for his decades of service, she continued on to recognize Veterans Day.
“Veterans Day is not just a date on the calendar. It is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary individuals who did extraordinary things in the name of freedom. These individuals didn’t just serve; they helped shape the liberties we enjoy today.”
She continued, “Here in the City of Peshtigo, we are especially proud to have veterans who continue their service beyond the military in roles that keep our city safe, running and thriving.”
Berman recognized the following individuals for their military and civic commitments: Robert Warren, alderman and council president; Tony O’Neill, alderman; Fred Popp, police chief; Randy Miller and Steve Schmidt, part-time officers; Jeff Vorphal, public works; John Breault, parks and recreation; John Valitchka, part-time parks and public works; Brandon Lindsey and Shawn Northrop; firefighters and EMRs.
In other board action, they approved a recommendation from the Commercial Park Oversight Committee for the compliance and collaboration notice and the letter of recruitment to property and business owners for committee advisory positions.
Additionally, the 2026 fee schedule was approved and the judiciary committee will meet in December to discuss amending the council meeting time from 7 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Finally, a Transportation Alternative Program application for preparation of a safe routes to school plan was approved as well as updated urban area boundaries from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for road category classification.
The City of Peshtigo Common Council will hold their final regular meeting of 2025 on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m.
