Axtell Propels Maroons over Bulldogs

Posted

The Menominee Maroons got a huge, 32-point performance out of Anna Axtell on Thursday, Feb. 1 as they defeated Peshtigo by a final score of 51-34.

“Menominee is a well coached team that likes to play physical. I thought we matched their intensity well early on,” said Peshtigo head coach Pete Villas. “We were able to force some turnovers and got good shots up in the first half. Unfortunately for us, most of them didn’t go through the hoop. But our defense kept us in it until the last three or four minutes of the first half. Menominee went on an 8-0 run to finish the half and go up 13 at halftime. In the second half, we got worn down. Four of our five starters were battling through not feeling well. We struggled to close out playing our zone defense. Anna Axtell put up 32 points total and had a huge second half for them. She hit four 3-pointers that put the game away for them. That was the difference.”

The Bulldogs were led by 13 points from Holly Pesch and nine apiece from Audra Bauman and Rylie Ellie.

“We were finally able to pull one out late in a game. The game was back and forth all night. The girls did a great job battling back and taking the lead in the second half,” said Peshtigo head coach Pete Villas, breaking down Tuesday’s win. “With just under 6 minutes to go, I told the girls to slow down our offense and get good shots. We were able to do that and with around 3 minutes left, we were able to really work the clock and force them to foul. Audra (Bauman) and Holly (Pesch) hit clutch free throws at the end to help seal the win.”

PESHTIGO – The Bulldogs ran into a tough opponent at home on Saturday, Feb. 3 as Kewaunee came to town with its pressure defense and cruised to a 64-28 win.

“We played with good effort and intensity throughout the game. We were within a point or two for a good part of the first half,” said Peshtigo head coach Pete Villas in his rundown of the game. “We hit a stretch where we turned the ball over numerous times without getting into our offense and they stretched their lead to 14 by halftime. We came out ok to start the second half. Then we had two starters foul out with over nine minutes left in the game, which didn’t help us. From that point on, we couldn’t match their scoring and they pulled away. We played better against them this time than the first time we faced them. With Kewaunee being as good as they are, I am happy with that progress.”

Holly Pesch had a team-high 11 points for the Bulldogs.
